From steering column switches to complete, integrated modules: KOSTAL has been delivering steering column switches to the automotive industry for over 50 years.

From the first simple mechanical switches to operate the direction indicators and windscreen wipers, these devices have developed into complex mechatronic modules. In Europe, KOSTAL is the market leader in this product sector with over 30% of the business. The KOSTAL product range extends from combined steering column switches for compact cars, where proven contact systems are used to switch high-power applications, to tightly-integrated “high end” steering column modules in premium class vehicles with connection to the vehicle bus.

Mechatronic integration

In addition to standard components such as direction indicator switches, windscreen wiper switches and rotary couplers, complex steering column modules contain an electronic unit to monitor the vehicle’s steering angle, information from controls mounted on the steering wheel, cruise control/limit switch and gear selector systems.

Steering angle sensors

KOSTAL steering angle sensors cover the entire range of demands by present-day and future vehicle safety systems. In addition to ESP and AFS (active front steering) systems, they support modern sleep detection systems, parking aids and other comfort systems.

KOSTAL develops and produces low-cost, incremental measurement sensors as well as absolute measurement steering angle sensors with a resolution of up to 0.1°. These can be supplied as independent, standalone sensors or they can be integrated in the steering column module.
